Definitely worth a read. The comments are very interesting too. Good points there.
For accuracy's sake, it should be Rob rather than Bob. For the sake of anyone interested, this guy is Rob Sheridan, who does a healthy majority of the art and design work for Nine Inch Nails.
Funny; I *just* this second finished reading it. Excellent - and well balanced - piece.
I've linked to it from my own blog site
I think the one thing IPFI et. al. haven't counted on is that OiNK was / is a community, not just a place to "pirate music".
Not I expect them to "get it".
Wow, great article. I always felt the record labels were doing a bad job, but I wasn't able to articulate why. Even something as seemingly obvious as "CDs are DRM free" is something that needs to be said. It gave me a lot to think about, thanks for posting it.
That's VERY good. I've sent that link to as many people as I think will give a fuck.Glad to hear from you via this place & all the other tent-cities...
Thanks for the correction, i changed it into Rob. Glad some of you enjoyed the read :)
Awsome read, enjoyed every bit of it. Thank you for posting it.
I couldn't agree more. It's time to revolutionize, for the industry, and for the fans.
this article really ought to be on the front page of digg. the author has a note at the bottom of the article that digg is blocking the url from being submitted for some reason. if you have a sec email them at feedback@digg.com and request that the url be unblocked. i think the more intelligent and rational discussion about oink gets out into the world, the better.
Intelligent! Fascinating Read! I will be forwarding this to all music lovers. OiNK IS the best community, and is the future. It is only a matter of time.
ditto :)
Like i posted overthere. This was the most interesting thing i've read about music, and the industry in years. I'll try to share it as much as i can.
Thanks for the link.
Like i said overthere. This was the most interesting article i've read about music, and the industry in years. This should be posted on every blog/newssite/whatever in the world.
Thanks for the link
This is an absolutely awesome article, and 110% a recommended read. As a matter of fact, this is what any serious OiNK-user need to read so he/she will rest assured, that the world we've been a part of is NOT going to die.
Personally I'm entirely done with supporting anyone affiliated with RIAA - as a matter of fact, at this point I plan to exclusively buy physical CDs from independent artists and labels.
Thank you so much for linking to this, and I'll say this again: All OiNKers need to read this.
Very good analysis, Rob is SO right. But it doesn't bring back OiNK and i can't live with that.
What a perfect article, just as I would say it myself :P
Brilliantly written article, puts forward a well balanced and cohesive argument. Obviously, labels will ignore it and continue on their current path, but that's their funeral!
I loved it. I personally believe that something like this was bound to happen for a real thing to happen around us, I mean: we all lost something but it's not all over. I don't mean OiNK will be back. I mean that our view of the music will NEVER be the same, and that's a great lesson to the future.
OK. Something that this guy comments, is something I told you about: stop purchasing music. I told you a couple of days ago, that you should make a button for people to post on their websites, very similar to that "I <3 Firefox" button. The idea is still there...
What a brilliant article! Thanks for the link - have added to my blog and some more for good measure. I'm 41 and have been buying music for decades and more so since I was invited into OiNK - NEVER AGAIN - fuck 'em!
cool article. I shared it with friends.
whoever said it was well balanced is nuts. it's not balanced just b/c it happens to be your view.
that said, this dude better not be a member over at indietorrents!

did you guys see the OiNK tribute video/song?

Don't post this, I'm just letting you know I made this button, want to encourage you to use it, and to encourage you to encourage (xD) others to use it as well.
It's simple, and it's not OiNK-related, so more and more people can use it. You see, if you make a stand, you have to show it to the world.
I expect feedback, so comment me back (anonymous) if you feel like it.
Take care.
The article is fairly well-balanced. Sheridan details his own experience within the industry and documents his perspective turn-around. And as an artist whose payday has come courtesy of the biz in his past, its a relative perspective.
Well-written, too. Definitely something to reference.
Also, for an alternative view of intellectual property along the lines of Sheridan's piece, check out hxxp.downhillbattle.org
Beyond contributing to the above, I have no affiliation, mind you.
There are many good points in there, especially with the industry not keeping up with technology. I think theres alot to be said with how Intellectual property is to be looked at this coming century.
Actually, I think the author was a retard by making no connection between big bad corporate music heavy-handedness and the iPod he so loves and wants to define himself by -- the one mp3 player with rights restrictions and protections that most represents this very culture he is rallying against.
It's like all the retards who complain about all their jobs going overseas to China, but then say how much they love Wal-Mart and buy all the $29 Chinese-made DVD players there that they can.
yeah this is by far the most influential article i've ever read about the music industry. It ties everything together and is brilliantly put. I've emailed it to as many people as I can, and I will be talking about it to everyone I know. WOW!!
That was a great read.
And the line that said Alan Ellis would have been Steve Jobs really put a smile on my face.
In a way he is already.
Thanks for the link by the way.
Excellent article! I hope it gets a lot of attention around the web, because it is a perfect commentary on the music industries current situation with piracy.
P.S- I'm still in shock over no more OiNK. It was such a great community. Thanks for running this site and giving out some reliable information on the situation. I hope all goes well for oink and his family.
Nice lecture. I do not agree on that Radiohead part steping in the right direction. They're just making profit of what they cannot control, because lots of superfans want to show how fans they are paying for that 160 kbps shit. Just release a good quality thing or stay quiet.
M.
I'm glad that that you're acknowledging the greatness of waffles. We were kind of wondering... Anyway, thanks!
So wafflehat will become reality?
Great article and good to see some people back :-) :bounce:
Spread the word ... i did.
Awesome article, everything he said makes perfect sense.
can't wait for a taste of waffles...mmm
thanks again for everything paine!
I was liking it, until he said downloading material was like stealing a car. I stopped reading at that point.
Too bad for you.
"just because some snotty, acne-faced internet kids"
did my dad write this article?
I have coffee, cookies, and beer :)
and this article is very interesting!
I want to buy a print of the image he used for the post. Perhaps you could talk to him about selling prints/tshirts to benefit OiNK or artists.
I would buy a print and a shirt of that. Made me feel all weepy again.
